Participation in “Sensors with graphene” workshop

On November 23, the “Sensors with graphene” workshop was organized jointly by SIO Grafen, RISE, and the Graphene Flagship and was hosted by one of the CAMART2 partners - RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. The workshop focused on graphene in sensors and provided an opportunity to listen to presentations and participate in discussions.

A leading researcher from the ISSP UL’S Laboratory of Micro and Nanodevices, Dr. Phys. Thomas Alexander Yager participated in the workshop with an invited talk. He found it valuable and inspiring to reconnect with his previous contacts and make new ones in graphene research and technology. 

Graphene science has been quite well developed now since its discovery almost 20 years ago. There is still new and surprising science from graphene, but there is also a significant effort to move towards graphene technology, applications, and commercialization. Graphene-based sensors are one of the most promising areas for current and near-future product development. The workshop targeted these aims, connecting academic researchers and industrial companies. There were more than 40 representatives, with around 50% mixture of the two.

The sensing topics at the workshop were quite varied, with one focus being on infrared sensing for improved vision and remote chemical sensing. This was also the main topic of Thomas Yager’s invited talk, where he presented his research carried out in the cleanroom facilities of ISSP UL and in collaboration with RISE and Swedish-based gas sensing company “Senseair”.

The “Sensors with graphene” workshop was well attended despite the weather conditions, as it was snowing heavily, and travel disruption was in place. There was a mixture of presentations, pitches, and discussions.

SIO Grafen is a national Strategic Innovation Program supporting industrial graphene development in Sweden. The program is supported by the Swedish government agencies Vinnova (Sweden’s innovation Agency), the Swedish Energy Agency, and the Swedish Research Council Formas. The vision for 2030 is that Sweden is among the world’s top ten countries deploying graphene to ensure industrial leadership.

Graphene Flagship was funded by the European Commission in 2013; it has brought nearly 170 academic and industrial partners in 22 countries together to bring graphene innovation out of the lab and into commercial applications.
