ISSP’S UL visit to Germany promotes Latvia’s cooperation with the german photonics industry

October 23 - 25 representatives of the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) participated in a delegation organized by the Ministry of Economics of the Republic of Latvia on a visit to Wetzlar, one of the most important regions of the photonics industry in Germany. In order to promote closer and faster cooperation, the visit was also attended by significant companies of the Latvian photonics industry, which have many years of cooperation with the ISSP UL.

During the visit, the Latvian delegation attended a conference "Modern Optical Manufacturing", which brings together Germany’s most important companies active in the development and processing of photonics components. It was a great opportunity to establish face-to-face contacts and discuss key achievements in the photonics industry. In order to promote closer cooperation, the Latvian delegation met with the cluster that brings together companies from the region, Photonics Hub. The cluster was formed in 2018 by merging the Optence and Bayern photonics business associations in the near regions. During the talks, representatives of the Photonics Hub were introduced to the photonics industry in Latvia and an agreement was reached to develop further cooperation between the two countries.

The Latvian delegation also included representatives from Latvian photonics companies: GroGlass, LightSpace Technologies, EuroLCDs, Evoled.

EuroLCDs is developing innovative product and industrial technologies that deliver ultimate performance in several LCD product application areas: world’s fastest optical shutter technology based on transient scattering operating mode of LCD cell, bistable low energy consumption display cells, manufacturing technology of smart (switchable) glass products. 

Evoled develops new materials for future LED technology- Organic Light emitting diodes.

Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia is one of the largest institutes and a leader in the material sciences and cross-disciplinary topics in Latvia, which can provide internationally competitive research and innovative solutions for industrial applications. ISSP, UL is internationally distinguished by its interdisciplinary research in the material sciences with an emphasis on nanoscience and nanotechnologies of new advanced functional materials and processes. A special focus is materials applicable for sustainable energetics, nanoelectronics and photonics.
