On June 4, 2019 with the award ceremony at the Great Hall of the University of Latvia the 3rd European Physics Olympiad (EuPhO) ended. The Olympiad brought together 35 best European secondary school pupils in physics.

European Physics Olympiad (EuPhO) is a contest for secondary school students. In addition to the International Physics Olympiad (started in 1967) there exist traditions of regional competitions such as Asian Physics Olympiad (since 2000) and Ibero-American Physics Olympiad (since 1991). The concept of EuPhO is similar to real research situations, with short problems description and plenty of space for creative solutions. This year’s Olympiad took place from May 31 to June 4. It was a great opportunity for the Institute to inform the local and international pupils about the Institute of Solid State Physics and CAMART2 project and invite them think about the career at the ISSP UL.

Consequently, the Year of Physics, the final events of which started on June 1 at the University of Latvia Academic Centre for Natural Sciences and during which one could enjoy exciting physics experiments, mind sharpening tasks and many other activities. More than ten scientific institutes and high-tech companies showed their work and explained how the knowledge of physics helped in creating things at the exhibition “Feel the Physics”.

At the stand of the Institute of Solid State of Physics, the visitors could draw on a special surface using the light sources as well as top calculate the speed of light using chocolate heating in the microwave oven.
